ZENO

Denver : Sub.Mission / Shift / Trillbass / Dirty Circuit / Betamorph
David Randolph Jones, influenced by the sounds of record labels such as Tectonic, Hyperdub, and DMZ, started creating dubstep under the Zeno name in the spring of 2007. Prior to that, he spent his time developing his production skills for almost 15 years under various downtempo and broken beat projects. His love of the dubstep sound came out of these roots. He began filling the wide spaces between the bass and snare drums with the audio-visions that came into his mind. The result has evolved into a sound that stands alone in the world of dubstep. That sound is what has been referred by many as driving, hypnotic, psychedelic, intelligent, and fun.
Zeno is a producer, a DJ, a turntablist, a drummer and a multimedia guru. He strongly believes that the remix culture is one of companionship, love and passion for music, not unlike Jamaica’s dub culture. He has produced unauthorized remixes by artists such as Orbital, Dj Zinc, Michael Jackson, and Lonely Island, incorporating his unique style. He has also brought attention to his name with countless unreleased remixes that he incorporates in his live sets.
He also feels strongly about being involved in the online communities in the positive way. Thinking Juice, his online radio broadcast, receives worldwide attention. In June 2009, the Thinking Juice broadcast broke a record for an all time high listener count on dubstep.fm at 492 listeners.
When it comes to Zeno’s performance style, he prefers to leave things open to improvisation. Zeno works with the crowd, taking them on a journey from one point in space and time to another. Every one of his sets is unique and stands alone.
Zeno has several releases and remixes available from Shift Recordings, Trillbass Recordings, Sub.Mission, Betamorph and others. Many of these releases have been at the top of the charts on digital download sites such as Digital-Tunes.net. In August, 2009, Zeno’s latest EP will be released via Dirty Circuit Recordings. This album features 6 original tracks ranging in mood from super-chill to mega-hyphy! Many of these tracks are already floating around and receiving support from such artists as Antiserum, Bombaman, Blackheart, Emu & Pawn, HD4000, Stenchman, Lukki, Trillbass, Widdler, and much more.

LOCAL SUPPORT FROM….

KABZ

Ground Zero Project / Spacecake Productions
KaBz has been playing records since 1993, transcending all genres, but now he’s focused solely on playing the darker gritty side of dubstep. He had his debut release on Ground Zero Projects Records from the UK earlier in the year and has been a featured guest on a number of internet radio shows. While he says there’s nothing wrong with the stuff coming out of Europe/UK he is a strong advocate of North American dubstep and has a tendency to gravitate more towards domestic artists in his sets.

Bass Goes Boom: 16Bit - KAM (MC) - 2nd Anniversary!

Posted by TMM On May - 19 - 2009

16Bit | West London, UK

BOKA RECORDS // SOUTHSIDE DUBSTARS // Z AUDIO
With their massive debut EP ‘In The Death Car’ featuring the now infamous
“chainsaw track,” 16bit have rapidly shot into the limelight.

Their massively varied productions delve into every corner of the dubstep
world, ranging from “halfstep rhythms…shot through with 10,000 watts of
current” to “glitched 2-step and sub driven riddims”. Their live shows are
intense, to say the least and they’ve seen support from Kissy Sell Out, Mala
(Digital Mystikz), Rusko, Chef and many others with a constantly growing fan
base.

Hot on the heels of the Death Car EP, 16bit will soon be dropping their
follow-up EP on the legendary Southside Dubstars imprint.

They played their debut set in Tokyo, Japan just two months after their
debut 12″ (PCP/President Of Europe) dropped, and have since played massive
sets in Paris, London, and all around the UK and Europe.

Cringer | Chicago, IL

DUBFRONT // WNUR // PTS // 60HZ
Raised by jackals in the darkest mountain recesses of Appalachia, Cringer emerged from the back woods armed with two turntables and a fattened sack of dubplates. Traveling to Chicago, he found home with the Part Time Sucker crew bringing his signature brand of bass-ridden drum-driven Jungle and Drum n’ Bass. Since then, Cringer has crossed paths with the low level rumblings known as Dubstep and, after dueling with swords on the beaches of Ganryu Island, they joined forces to untwine soundscapes that exist where bass becomes “sub”. Currently, Cringer can be found ruthlessly rattling bass bins, scorching dancefloors and tracking the sun in anticipation of 2012. To seek the Cringer, one merely need follow the trail of toppled speaker stacks and demolished sub cabinets.

SPECIAL GUEST MC….

Kam Franklin | Houston, TX

GRITSY
Returning for her 2nd BGB appearance… Kam refers to her sound as “experimental soul” because she not only strives to step out of the box, but she doesn’t try to limit or fit into the mold that most others define as soul. In January 2008 she became affiliated with Gritsy, a dubstep crew in Houston that throws big dubstep/drum and bass events in the Houston area and hosts Dubstep DJs from all over the world. Soon after this, Kam started being regularly invited MC Dubstep events all around the country offering her freestyles where need be.When not performing her solo stuff or at dubstep shows, Kam is also a member of local Houston doowop group the Pearls, country group The Umbrella Man( with Billy Joe Shaver bassist Nick Gaitan). She also performs regularly with the afro-reggae group Free Radicals.Kam has previously shared the stage with Aloe Blacc,Mates of state,J-Davey,RX Bandits,Portugal the Man and many others. On any given day, you can catch Kam free styling over an afro/dubstep-beat with country lyrics, while singing over the track with a blues/gospel twang that will have you convinced it couldn’t have sounded any other way. Kam is currently working on a country EP, a Dub EP, and her solo LP all to be released within the year.

EMALKAY, UK | Boka Records / Dub Police

Big, bad, heavy: three simple words to describe the sound of one of dubstep’s most complex artists, Emalkay. Certainly no stranger when it comes to playing left field, Emalkay takes his own innovative style to a whole other level!

With support from the likes of Amon Tobin, The Scratch Perverts, Freq-nasty and Mary Anne Hobbs, as well as prominent dubsteppers Benga and N-type, Emalkay has proven himself to be one of the most influential pioneers of the heavier dubstep sound.

With initial support in the form of grime veteran Plastician, “Birmingham’s finest” Emalkay - pronounced em-al-kay - gained the attention of South London based label Boka Records with the warped, future bass drones and epic strings of Gut Feeling. Continuing the success, Testing The Waters EP was released in October 2006 followed by Monsters in June 2007.

The revolutionary sound of Mecha, released in the fall of 2007, gained Emalkay support from the likes of Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs and breakbeat pioneer FreQ Nasty, as well as many of the leading figures of the current dubstep scene. It seemed Emalkay’s own potential as a pivotal dubstep artist was finally being realised. His final release on Boka Records was the reggae influenced My Story in April 2008.

In the fall of 2008, Emalkay produced Explicit - a tune that gradually captured the interest of such prominent dubsteppers as Benga and received major support from acts such as The Scratch Perverts and drum and bass duo Chase and Status. After being approached by Caspa however, the track was finally released on the Dub Police label in February 2009 after much anticipation.

JEEKOOS, CHI | PTS / Dubfront / Filthy Digital / WNUR

With his roots in hip-hop and jungle/dnb, When dubstep caught up with him, with its slower pace but equivalent intensity, gnarly basslines and attention to detail, the incorporation of it into his sets and production style was only natural. As his sound evolves and his skills flourish, Jeekoos stays deeply involved in the Chicago dubstep scene. Respect to tha Wubmaster!
